Boy, 6, Drowns While Saving 3-Year-Old Sister

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A 6-year-old boy who drowned in his grandparents' half-drained pool died while saving his 3-year-old sister, family members said.

James Alton Barbour Jr. died Saturday at the home near Smithfield. His younger sister, Alona, told family members that James had pushed her to the shallow end of the pool, where she stayed in just over a foot of water.

"She just kept saying, 'He saved me, he saved me,"' said Kristal Kelley, an aunt of the children. "He's our little hero."

James apparently lost his footing and slipped below the water. Family members found the children after his mother, Tammy Barbour, noticed that the gate to the pool was open.

Officials with the Johnston County Sheriff's Department said they don't expect to file charges in the case.

A Kosher Pink

I love artiste, award-winning director and painter Julian Schnabel. First off, he directed BASQUIAT. Great film! If you haven't seen it, you really must.

The next reason I love Julian Schnabel is because he painted an apartment building he owned BRIGHT ASS PINK! And I think it looks kind of hot.

The 14 story building has incurred no small amount of wrath, the most colorful of which flows from West Village preservationist crazy Andrew Berman, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation's director.

"I don't know for sure -- but my fear is that this will be the color," he said. "I think virtually any other color would be more acceptable." Berman called the building -- with arched windows and clay roof tiles -- Mediterranean style. "What it actually looks like is a house you would see in the hills above Hollywood -- if it was two stories. On the Greenwich Village waterfront at 17 stories, it's a nightmare," he said. The preservationist thought this very may well be intentional -- that Schnabel wants to punish, with pink, those who opposed him..."It almost looks as though he went to great pains to make this building as ugly as possible and to make it stick out like a sore thumb," Berman observed.

Woman Killed by Her Own Pet Dog

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. — A one-year-old chow mix apparently turned on its owner, killing her with bites to her throat and arm, authorities said.

Phyllis G. Carroll, 63, was mauled by one of her two black chow mix dogs around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, said Fayette County Coroner Joe Todd.

Both dogs were seized and will be destroyed at the request of the victim's family, he said.

Carroll kept the dogs, a male and female from the same litter, in a yard behind her home in Connersville. There were no witnesses, but Todd said authorities believed the male dog, which was the larger of the two, attacked Carroll.

The dog bit Carroll in the arm as she carried treats out from the house, then bit her throat after she fell to the ground. Eight sets of bite marks were found on Carroll, Todd said.

She bled to death from her wounds, he said.

Friends said Carroll had become increasingly afraid of the aggressive dogs, Todd said.

"In 34 years of investigating deaths I have never, ever had a vicious animal attack that resulted in the death of the victim," he said.

So Not Kosher - Woman Whores Her Teen Daughter Out

MUSKEGON, Mich. — A Muskegon Heights woman was sentenced Monday to 12 to 22 1/2 years in prison after authorities said she used a written contract to arrange for her 15-year-old daughter to have sex with the woman's boyfriend for two months while she recuperated from abdominal surgery.

The 41-year-old woman, whom The Associated Press is not identifying to protect her daughter's identity, in April pleaded no contest in Muskegon County Circuit Court to three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt but judges treat it as a guilty plea at sentencing.

"What you've done to your daughter is one of the worst things I can think of," Judge Timothy G. Hicks said at the sentencing hearing.

Authorities said the woman agreed to the arrangement because she feared losing her boyfriend, Michael Fitzgibbon, while recuperating from the operation.
